
The Research Group Studies on Aging and Neurodegenerative Diseases
Aging research has a great social importance for the European Union and its Member States. Over the past decades the developed world is experiencing an increase in the number of older adults. Better life conditions and substantial medical advances have increased longevity. But as humans aged, many declines occur in the cognitive system. The speed at which information is processed in the human brain, inhibitory function, working memory and episodic memory, among others, suffer age-related declines. In contrast, other cognitive functions such as verbal abilities and implicit memory are age-invariant.
